Typical standardized tests are summative formal tests. They
are summative because they measure the information known at the end of a period
of time. They are formal because they are planned. Validity is the extend to
which a test measure what it actually wants to measure. Standardized tests do
not always have good validity. Sometimes they are not valid because they do not
apply to a certain ethnic backgrounds or minority groups. They might not be
able to understand the language used and even though they have the knowledge
they might get the answer wrong. In this very way, standardizes test are not
completely standardized, or equitable to everyone.
How do you think schools/testing agencies can make standardized tests more fair for everyone?
ReplyDeleteGood point--a test might be meant to assess scientific knowledge while assessing language comprehension, or even performance under pressure!
