Module 9 Post 2

Mr. Gates is a 2nd grade teacher.  He can tell that many of his students are not putting a lot of effort towards learning their multiplication tables.  So, he decided to reward the students that got all of the multiplication problems correct on their time sheets.  This will hopefully motivate those students that are doing good to continue and hopefully motivate the rest of the class.  The second thing is that he will give students a sticker if they do not get in any trouble during the day, and if they get 5 stickers at the end of the week they will be able to get a sucker.  He also will give the students extra English homework if the students do not raise their hands to answer questions in class.

  1. Its a great way to reward the kids for putting in the extra work on their multiplication tables. It encourages the students that their is a reward for great schools, and give something to work for (besides the A)!

  2. Here you're talking about behaviorism as a motivator (which we'll talk about after midterms). What behavior, specifically, are they learning through this positive reinforcement (and you should mention that it is positive reinforcement and what that does)?

I like how you specified the exact behavior you wanted to increase at the end--raising hands. Breaking this down in the other examples would be very helpful, but for this one, how is the extra homework working? It seems to me to be negative reinforcement, since he's giving the positive punishment, but taking it away if students raise their hands.... ?
