1. A teacher has just taught the class about the different
bones and muscles in the body. To reinforce this lesson, the teacher can show
the Hannah Montana “Bone Dance” on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Waxf9KZWpM
This will allow students to remember the
names of the bones by doing a dance, which was created by a student. It will
also give the students a different way of studying and remembering information.
For future classes, students can come up with songs, dances, or any other
creative way to keep information in their memory. This is influenced by the culture we live in because it's easy to make connections with things that we already know, such as songs. By using songs that we hear on the radio, we can attribute those to things we have learned in our classroom.
2. The class has just learned about the classification of
life in biology. The classification goes in this order: Kingdom, Phylum, Class,
Order, Family, Genus, Species. It is important to remember this sequence
because an animal is classified in this particular order. A teacher can aid a
student in memorizing this by helping him create a mnemonic device. A mnemonic
device is a memory tool that helps students remember key facts. In this
particular case, the mnemonic device can be: King Phillip Came
Over For Green Soup. A normal sentence that has
words that begin with the first letter of the words that need to be remembered
can help connect the information faster.
It's funny that you mention the Hannah Montana bone dance because my younger sister said that her teacher played the video in her science class once to help the class remember some of the bones in a more fun way!
ReplyDeleteI thought you first idea was very good. Technology is such a huge part of students' lives now. Even really young children are using iPads and cell phones, so I think it's important to integrate technology into the classroom. Youtube can be a really great tool because kids are familiar with it and it can reinforce topics in an engaging and fun way.
ReplyDeleteI also like your second idea about the mnemonic device. My freshman biology teacher used a similar sentence to help us remember the different classifications. Mnemonic devices are a simple technique that often get overlooked by teachers and students, but they really can help. I thought it was nice how you related the topic of social learning back to information processing.
