Piaget Blog Post 2

In the video, the little boy appears to be in the pre-operational stage and the girl appears to be in the concrete operational stage. The little boy and girl was told the rules. Number one said that a feather could break a glass, and number two said that someone used a feather to hit the glass, and asked what happened? The little boy responded nothing happened because the feather is soft and it can't break the glass.  The older girl responded that the glass broke because rule number one said that a feather would break the glass, and therefore based on rule one, that the question of what happened would be that the glass broke. The little boy appears to be in the pre operational stage because of his inability to engage in operations that involve two way thinking. He is unable to reverse back and understand that rule number one applies to the question given in rule two. The girl however is able to manipulate the operation, and engage in two way thinking. She understands how to go back to rule one and apply it to the question at hand.

With the little boy, he is exhibiting centration. This means that he has an inability to focus on two dimensions simultoneously. Techniques used to teach him could be to work on sorting things not just by color, but also by size. Working in new categories into sorting things, will help him be able to acquire conservation, and understanding of things staying the same. The girl is in the concrete operational stage and techniques to teach her would revolve around working on reasoning skills. They can think two dimensionally now, but expanding on their reasoning skills is crucial to being able to advance to formal operational stage. The techniques must differ because of the stage at which the child is at. Learning can only happen if the child is developmentally ready according to Piaget. Therefore, one must be at a certain stage to be able to process and learn information.
