Intrinsic Motivation 2

Hannah seems to be showing signs of low self-efficacy. She has a low self-esteem and finds herself to be competent in whatever task the teacher may ask of her. Hannah doesn't have many friends either because she hasn't branched out. All of these combined can make Hannah feel as if she is not good enough to be doing things in school and seeks the attention of someone. This attention is from her teacher and Hannah uses it to get some sort of companionship, even though the teacher may get frustrated with her. Ways to combat this would be to allow more time for group work. Allow Hannah to be involved with other classmates, interact with new students, and make friends who could help her throughout the course of the year with her subjects/assigned tasks. Also allowing Hannah to have after school or before school tutoring may help her with her confidence and may also help her gain more personal time gaining relationships with her teacher.

  1. I'm not sure if asking for help would directly increase self efficacy. Could you explain a bit more about the mechanism? I might suggest that the teach give her much smaller short term goals over time, so she can see her progression as positive feedback and gain a feeling of competence.

  2. I do think that Hannah exhibits low self efficacy. It does say that her teacher does help her through the problems and she can do them but won't do them without help. You suggest that tutoring before or after school would help her. Do you think she has the motivation to learn from a tutor if she won't try with a teacher's help. It would be interesting to see if tutoring would help increase her efficacy and if she would even try a problem.

  3. I think it's important to help hannah integrate herself into the classroom by participating in group work and building relationships with peers. Hannah probably doesn't need to ask for help, because the teacher has been willing to help her and continues to do so, but hannah still doesn't have the motivation to do the problems. I think it's important to build hannah's confidence and help motivate her intrinsically to complete the problems.
