The Vygotsky avatar discusses some cultural tools to aid memory, and how these have changed over time, from carrying sticks to taking notes. By 'cultural' or 'societal', Vygotsky means that it was created by someone else, and is used in particular ways based on the culture we're in. These methods store information in the outside world until it can gradually be 'internalized' in our mind. What are two other cultural tools or practices (other than notetaking) that are present in most classrooms today? Be sure to note why these tools/practices are used/done the way they are because the culture we happen to be in.
Another cultural tool or practice used in classrooms is flashcards. Flashcards are used to help students memorize information quickly. Students can use flashcards to help remember definitions, spelling words, vocabulary, math facts, and many more subjects. Our American culture is based on getting things done fast and easy. Flashcards definitely provide this. The students can review and memorize information by quickly flipping through the cards.
Another cultural tools used in classrooms is computers. Computers can be used for many different lessons. They can be used to help gather information on a specific topic, show pictures and videos, type papers, create presentation, and relate the lesson to a game or fun activity. Computers are used widely in classrooms and can be used for an unlimited amount of resources. In American cultures almost young students can fluently use computers without a problem, but in some other countries computers are not available to every family. They do not have the success to computers that our American classrooms and students have.
